Lipa grew up with musical influences ranging from David Bowie and Bob Dylan to Radiohead and The Police, plus her father's work as lead singer of Kosovan rock band Oda. After time spent in Pristina, Kosovo during her childhood, she returned to London as a teenager to pursue music. She began posting covers and original material online before signing with Warner Bros. Records in 2014.
Her 2017 self-titled debut combined pop, dance-pop and R&B across tracks like Be the One, New Rules, IDGAF and Blow Your Mind (Mwah), reaching the UK top five and earning her Brit Awards for British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act in 2018. In 2018 she collaborated with Calvin Harris on One Kiss, which became the UK's best-selling single that year, and won a Grammy for Best New Artist in 2019.
Future Nostalgia arrived in March 2020 as a disco and electronic-influenced shift that debuted at number one in the UK. Singles including Don't Start Now, Physical, Break My Heart and Levitating dominated charts globally, with Levitating earning recognition as Billboard's top song of 2021. The album won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album and the Brit Award for British Album of the Year. She released Club Future Nostalgia as a remix companion and performed the Studio 2054 livestream concert during this period. Radical Optimism followed in May 2024, developed with producers like Tame Impala's Kevin Parker and featuring psychedelic pop and britpop elements; it debuted at number one in the UK and number two on the Billboard 200.
