About Dire Straits
Formed by Mark Knopfler, his brother David, John Illsley, and Pick Withers, Dire Straits released their self-titled debut in 1978 with "Sultans of Swing" as the lead single, a track that broke into both UK and US top tens and introduced their signature lean aesthetic. The band sustained momentum through the early 1980s with Communiqué, Making Movies, and Love over Gold, establishing themselves as craftspeople rather than trends. Their 1985 album Brothers in Arms became a watershed moment: it sold 30 million copies worldwide, was the first album to ship a million units on compact disc, and remains the eighth-best-selling album in UK history.
Dire Straits' commercial peak coincided with their 1985-1986 world tour and a Live Aid performance, but success brought pressure that Mark Knopfler found creatively draining. The band split in 1988, regrouped briefly from 1990 to 1995 for On Every Street and a final tour that moved 7.1 million tickets, then disbanded for good. Knopfler has consistently refused reunion offers, instead building a substantial solo catalog. The group won four Grammy Awards and three Brit Awards, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018, cementing their standing among the best-selling artists worldwide with 100 to 120 million units sold.
