About Death Cab for Cutie

The band began when Gibbard, inspired by a Bonzo Dog Band track from the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour film, recorded a cassette called You Can Play These Songs with Chords. The project's early success prompted him to assemble a full lineup with guitarist Chris Walla, bassist Nick Harmer, and drummer Nathan Good. Their 1998 debut LP Something About Airplanes established the template for what would follow, and We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes in 2000 demonstrated their expanding range.

The Photo Album arrived in 2001 with limited editions containing bonus material later released as The Stability EP, while a drummer change brought Jason McGerr into the fold for 2003's Transatlanticism, which became their top-selling album with 225,000 copies moved in its first year. In November 2004, the band signed to Atlantic Records after years on Barsuk, releasing Plans in August 2005 to Grammy nomination and eventual Gold status. Narrow Stairs followed in 2008 as their first Billboard 200 number one, featuring the single I Will Possess Your Heart, and Codes and Keys arrived in 2011. A remastered tenth-anniversary edition of Transatlanticism dropped in 2013 with vinyl and demo versions of all album tracks.
