D'Angelo was a neo-soul singer, keyboardist, and guitarist who shaped the sound of 1990s R&B with his technically fluid approach and conceptual albums. His three studio releases across nearly two decades established him as a central figure in the neo-soul movement, from the chart success of his debut through the ambitious arrangements of his later work.
About D'Angelo
D'Angelo signed with EMI in 1991 after submitting a demo tape that caught executive attention. He first gained recognition writing and performing on the Jason's Lyric soundtrack before recording his debut. Brown Sugar arrived in June 1995 with modest initial sales that picked up considerably after "Lady" became a Top Ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100. The album eventually achieved platinum certification with over one million copies sold in the U.S., and its success helped establish neo-soul alongside comparable debuts from Maxwell, Erykah Badu, and Lauryn Hill.
After a four-and-a-half-year hiatus that included soundtrack contributions and a featured spot on Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, D'Angelo released Voodoo in 2000 to immediate commercial success, debuting at number one. The album earned two Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. The second single, "Untitled (How Does It Feel)," became a major R&B hit and generated significant cultural attention through its music video. The resulting Voodoo Tour became one of the most talked-about live soul experiences of its era, featuring an elaborate stage production and a touring ensemble called The Soultronics. After largely disappearing from public view for years, D'Angelo returned with Black Messiah in 2014, credited to D'Angelo and The Vanguard, receiving renewed critical recognition.
