About Creedence Clearwater Revival
John Fogerty led CCR as vocalist, lead guitarist, and primary songwriter, supported by his brother Tom on rhythm guitar, Stu Cook on bass, and Doug Clifford on drums. The four had worked together since their junior high school days as the Blue Velvets, then navigated several name changes (Vision, the Golliwogs) under Fantasy Records before settling on Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1968. Their early covers of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You" and other material set the stage for their commercial explosion that followed.
The band's peak output arrived in 1969 and 1970. "Bayou Country" introduced "Proud Mary" and "Born on the Bayou", establishing their Louisiana-inflected groove. "Green River" reached number one and became their first US chart-topper, while "Cosmo's Factory" followed in 1970 with some of their finest work: "Travelin' Band", "Lookin' Out My Back Door", and an extended take on "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" that stripped the Marvin Gaye original to its raw bones. The band's 1969 Woodstock appearance, though absent from the official film, remains a crucial moment in their history. Internal friction over artistic control and disputes with Fantasy Records owner Saul Zaentz led to their breakup in 1972, though their catalog has remained a fixture of classic rock radio ever since.
The Groove Hunter currently tracks 13 editions across the CCR catalog, including remastered pressings of "Cosmo's Factory" and "Green River" in colored vinyl, "Bayou Country" in Tangerine, plus "Chronicle: The 20 Greatest Hits", their blockbuster compilation that sold over twelve million copies in the US alone.
