Glover developed his stage name from the Wu-Tang Clan name generator while establishing himself as a writer and performer in comedy. Beginning in 2008 with independent albums like Sick Boi and Poindexter, he released a string of early projects including the mixtapes I Am Just a Rapper and I Am Just A Rapper 2, alongside Culdesac in 2010. His work moved from what he describes as gimmick-driven material toward more personal songwriting that addressed family, bullying, romance, and mental health struggles.
After signing to Glassnote Records in 2011, Glover released Camp that November, followed by Because the Internet in December 2013, which earned him Grammy nominations for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance for the single 3005. Beyond music, he maintains an electronic production alias as mcDJ and has worked across acting, stand-up comedy, and television writing, including his 2006-2009 tenure on NBC's 30 Rock, where he contributed to a Writers Guild Award-winning season.
