Cheap Trick is a power pop and rock and roll band from Rockford, Illinois that emerged in the late 1970s with a hybrid sound blending Beatles-style melody with punk rock speed and energy. Their 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction capped a four-decade run anchored by Rick Nielsen's songwriting and Robin Zander's distinctive hard rock vocals, despite only occasional mainstream chart success.

The band originated in 1967 when Nielsen and Petersson formed Fuse, with Bun E. Carlos joining several years later. Robin Zander arrived as vocalist in 1972, and the group took the name Cheap Trick. Zander emerged as one of the most capable hard rock vocalists of his generation, while Nielsen and Petersson became known for gear experimentation: Nielsen plays a five-necked solidbody electric guitar (visible in the video for She's Tight), and Petersson has wielded custom-made 8, 12, and even 18-string basses, including a Modulus instrument built for him in 1981.
The band found early traction in the Midwest and Japan throughout the late 1970s before breaking through with the multi-platinum live album At Budokan in 1978. Hit singles like I Want You to Want Me, Surrender, Dream Police, Don't Be Cruel (an Elvis cover), and The Flame built a catalog that kept them touring steadily through the 1980s and beyond. Their songwriting combined tunefulness with speed, and they extended their reach through theme songs for The Colbert Report and That 70s Show, both becoming fan favorites.
Cheap Trick has released material consistently from their 1977 debut through recent work like 2021's In Another World, maintaining a devoted collector base interested in their vinyl catalog.
