About Charley Crockett
Born in San Benito, Texas in 1984, Crockett acquired his first guitar from a pawn shop and taught himself to play by ear, developing an instinctive grasp of melody and chord work without formal theory knowledge. His early musical foundation came from unexpected sources: Curtis Mayfield and Nina Simone filtered through hip hop samples, alongside artists like J. Cole. As a teenager he began performing on the streets of the French Quarter in New Orleans and Deep Ellum in Dallas, then expanded his busking circuit to New York City by 2009, eventually organizing a street band called the Trainrobbers that attracted a Sony Music management offer.
After declining the publishing aspects of that deal, Crockett spent three years working farms and communes in Northern California before periods living in Paris, Spain, and Morocco. He returned to recording and has released ten studio albums since 2015, with releases like Lil G.L.'s Blue Bonanza charting on the US Billboard Blues Albums chart. In 2020 he issued Field Recordings, Vol. 1, a mixtape of lo-fi recordings, alongside the studio album Welcome to Hard Times. His catalog has also included tribute work, notably 10 for Slim: Charley Crockett Sings James Hand in 2021, before moving toward albums like Lil G.L. Presents: Jukebox Charley in 2022.
