Born Daniel Rosenfeld in East Germany in 1989, C418 grew up in a household with musical roots when his brother introduced him to Aphex Twin and the tools needed to compose electronically. His brother's username inspired the cryptic moniker C418, and Rosenfeld developed his craft in the early 2000s using Schism Tracker and early versions of Ableton Live, skills that would later define his approach to working within Minecraft's technical constraints.
Rosenfeld met Minecraft creator Markus Persson through the indie game forum TIGSource in 2009 and was given complete creative freedom for the soundtrack. His work became integral to the game's identity, capturing atmospheric and nostalgic sensibilities that complemented the sandbox experience. Minecraft - Volume Alpha arrived in 2011, followed by Minecraft - Volume Beta in 2013, both achieving substantial reach with tracks like Sweden accumulating hundreds of millions of streams. In August 2023, Volume Alpha reached number one on Billboard's Emerging Artists chart, and the complete album was added to the United States Library of Congress in 2025.
Beyond the Minecraft franchise, Rosenfeld maintains an independent discography including Life Changing Moments Seem Minor in Pictures, Circle, one, 148, 2 Years of Failure, and Excursions. He has scored Minecraft: The Story of Mojang, Netflix's Beyond Stranger Things, and game soundtracks for Cookie Clicker and Wanderstop, while co-founding the indie game studio Ivy Road. Based in Austin, Texas, he releases music independently through Bandcamp and other platforms.
