About Boldy James
Born James Clay Jones III in Atlanta in 1982, Boldy James moved to Detroit at age one after his father, a police officer, was wounded in the line of duty. He grew up on Detroit's Eastside and later the Westside, near McNichols and the Southfield Freeway, where he started writing raps at twelve. He took his stage name from a neighborhood friend, James Osely III, who was called Boldy in the streets. When that friend was murdered, Boldy James carried the name forward into his music career.
His first national exposure came in 2009 through features on The Cool Kids and Don Cannon's Merry Christmas mixtape, particularly the tracks BBQ Wings and Tires. He followed with appearances on projects by Chip tha Ripper and others, while building momentum through solo mixtapes like Trappers Alley Pros and Cons (2011) and Consignment (2012), the latter earning recognition from Pitchfork. His 2013 debut album My 1st Chemistry Set showcased his partnership with producer The Alchemist and cemented his approach of pairing his deep, effortless delivery with bass-heavy beats.
Boldy James maintains family connections within Detroit's rap scene as a cousin of Chuck Inglish from The Cool Kids.
