Eleanora Fagan entered Harlem's nightclub circuit as a teenager and caught the attention of producer John Hammond, who signed her to Brunswick Records in 1935. That partnership with Teddy Wilson produced What a Little Moonlight Can Do, establishing her as a jazz vocalist with an ear for distinctive phrasing and tempo variation. Through the 1930s and 1940s, she recorded prolifically for Columbia and Decca, building a reputation rooted in expressive delivery and the ability to reshape a melody while maintaining its emotional core. Lester Young, her closest musical collaborator, gave her the nickname Lady Day, a title that stuck.

Holiday's personal struggles interrupted her recording output in the late 1940s, but a sold-out Carnegie Hall performance in 1953 marked her return to the public eye. She continued recording throughout the 1950s, including notable sessions for Verve Records. Her final studio work, Lady in Satin from 1958, documented a voice aged by hardship and illness, yielding a darker, more introspective tone than her earlier work. She died in July 1959 at age 44, but her influence on jazz singing, phrasing, and improvisational approach remained immense.
