Beck's breakthrough came through the indie single Loser on Bong Load Custom Records in 1993, a 12-inch pressing of just 530 copies that sparked a major label bidding war. Geffen Records signed him in 1994 with an unusual clause allowing independent releases, which Beck immediately exercised by putting out Stereopathetic Soulmanure and One Foot in the Grave simultaneously with his official debut Mellow Gold. Early critics dismissed him as a one-hit wonder despite this prolific output, a perception that persisted through the 1995 Lollapalooza tour where casual listeners only knew Loser.

Odelay in 1996 silenced the skeptics. Produced with The Dust Brothers, architects of the Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique, it delivered Where It's At as a crossover smash with MTV rotation and earned double-platinum status, topping the Pazz & Jop Critics Poll and two Grammy awards. Beck followed with a deliberate shift to folk and blues territory on Mutations in 1998, recorded with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich in rapid two-week sessions, then returned to high-energy arrangements on Midnite Vultures in 1999. Sea Change in 2002 moved toward introspective, emotional territory under Godrich's production again.

Beck's approach to instrumentation, sampling, and lyrical irony drew comparisons to Prince and post-modern folk sensibilities, though his absurdist style remained distinctly his own. His grandfather Al Hansen, a fluxus artist, influenced both his visual presentation and collage aesthetic. The Groove Hunter tracks 8 editions across Beck's catalog, including pressings of Mellow Gold, Odelay, Sea Change, Guero, and Morning Phase, plus the 180-gram reissue of Song Reader.
