Starting as a punk band called The Young Aborigines in 1979, the group transformed into the Beastie Boys after adding Adam Yauch on bass and changing direction toward hip-hop. The classic Mike D, MCA, and Ad-Rock lineup took shape in 1984 with Rick Rubin producing early 12-inch singles like Rock Hard and She's On It. Licensed to Ill arrived in 1986 as the first rap album ever to hit number one, selling over 5 million copies and establishing Fight for Your Right and No Sleep Till Brooklyn as cultural touchstones.
Paul's Boutique in 1989 marked a sonic pivot, layering intricate samples and references that rewarded repeat listening. Check Your Head returned to live instruments in 1992, introducing Money Mark and other collaborators who gave the group a touring lineup. The band maintained momentum through Ill Communication's 1994 number-one debut and Hello Nasty's 1998 success, which spawned the Intergalactic single and won Grammys in both rap and alternative categories, a first for any artist.
