About Aphex Twin

James grew up in Cornwall after his family relocated from Limerick, Ireland, and developed an early fascination with sound synthesis and equipment modification. By the late 1980s he was DJing at free parties across South West England, a scene that led to his debut EP "Analogue Bubblebath" on Mighty Force Records in 1991. That same year he co-founded Rephlex Records with Grant Wilson-Claridge, establishing an independent platform that would remain central to his output for decades. His 1992 album "Selected Ambient Works 85-92" announced his broader ambitions, blending ambient textures with precise electronic construction in ways that attracted serious listeners beyond the rave underground.

After signing to Warp Records, James released "...I Care Because You Do" (1995) and the influential "Richard D. James Album" (1996), which showcased his command of software synthesis and intricate breakbeats. The 1997 "Come to Daddy" EP and 1999 single "Windowlicker" gained wider recognition partly through Chris Cunningham's distinctive music videos, establishing James as a figure in both electronic music and visual culture. The double album "Drukqs" (2001) merged computer programming with prepared piano, demonstrating his range across rhythmic and compositional approaches. After leaving Warp, he continued releasing through Rephlex and under aliases like AFX and The Tuss, though these alternate projects have had complex histories with availability. A significant moment came in 2014 when fans crowdfunded the official release of "Caustic Window", a 1994 album that had circulated only in bootleg form. More recent work includes the Grammy-winning album "Syro" (2014), the EPs "Cheetah" (2016) and "Collapse" (2018), and 2023's "Blackbox Life Recorder 21f", which earned a Grammy nomination.
