About Amy Winehouse

Born in Enfield, London in 1983 to a Jewish family with strong jazz roots, Winehouse grew up immersed in the music her household valued. She participated in the National Youth Jazz Orchestra before signing a publishing deal with EMI, then moved to Island Records in 2002. Her debut Frank arrived in 2003, produced with Salaam Remi, and showcased mature songwriting within jazz-influenced arrangements that earned commercial traction in the UK. The lead single Stronger Than Me won an Ivor Novello Award and announced her arrival as a serious songwriter.

Back to Black in 2006 became her definitive statement, a collaboration with Salaam Remi, the Dap-Kings, and Mark Ronson that drew explicit inspiration from 1960s girl group and soul records. The album achieved international success and remains one of the best-selling releases of all time. Rehab, its lead single, reached top ten charts worldwide and secured her a second Ivor Novello Award. At the 2008 Grammy Awards, Winehouse won five awards in a single night, including Best New Artist and Record of the Year for Rehab, making her the first British woman to achieve that distinction.

Winehouse's personal struggles with substance abuse and mental health ultimately cut her life short in 2011 at age 27. Her catalog and legacy have been documented in the 2015 documentary Amy and the 2024 biopic Back to Black, while the Library of Congress added Back to Black to the National Recording Registry in 2025.
