Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek, and Gerry Beckley formed the band in London in 1970 after meeting as sons of US Air Force personnel stationed there. They signed with Warner Bros. immediately and released their debut album in 1971, which delivered two transatlantic hits right away: "A Horse with No Name" and "I Need You." The trio rode a consistent streak of chart success through the mid-1970s with singles like "Ventura Highway" from Homecoming, "Muskrat Love" from Hat Trick, "Tin Man" and "Lonely People" from Holiday, and "Sister Golden Hair" and "Daisy Jane" from Hearts. In 1973 they won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist, validating what radio programmers already knew about their appeal to mainstream audiences.
The band's commercial momentum shifted after Peek departed in 1977, with their output becoming less visible on charts until they broke back into the US Top 10 in 1982 with "You Can Do Magic." Their final Top 40 entry came in 1983 with "The Border." America continued recording and touring through subsequent decades, including the 2007 collaborative album Here & Now with artists influenced by their sound. They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2006 and received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 2012.
