Keys grew up in Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan, and began classical piano training at age seven. She attended Professional Performing Arts School as a valedictorian and briefly enrolled at Columbia University before committing to music full-time. Her early record deals with Columbia and Arista preceded her breakthrough with J Records in 2001.
Songs in A Minor arrived in June 2001 as a complete statement: it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, sold over 6.2 million copies domestically, and moved over 13 million units worldwide. The lead single Fallin' topped the Hot 100 for six weeks, while A Woman's Worth reached number three. At the 2002 Grammy Awards, Keys won five trophies including Best New Artist and Best R&B Album, making her the second female solo artist to win five in a single night. The album was reissued the following year as Remixed & Unplugged in A Minor, adding eight remixes and seven unplugged renderings. Her second album, The Diary of Alicia Keys, released December 2003, debuted with over 618,000 first-week copies sold, the largest first-week performance by a female artist that year. You Don't Know My Name and If I Ain't Got You became dominant singles, the latter notable for spending over a year on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Keys taped her MTV Unplugged session in July 2005 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, featuring rearranged originals and select covers.
