AFI (A Fire Inside) emerged from Ukiah, California in 1991 as a hardcore punk outfit before evolving into alternative rock experimentalists. The band's 1998 lineup solidified around Davey Havok's vocals and became one of the most charting acts of the 2000s emo-adjacent rock movement.

AFI's early years centered on raw hardcore energy, but their fifth album, The Art of Drowning (2000), signaled a shift toward broader alternative audiences. The real commercial breakthrough came with Sing the Sorrow (2003), which climbed to number five on the Billboard 200 and spent 51 weeks on the chart. Singles like Girl's Not Grey and Silver and Cold both peaked at number seven on the Modern Rock Tracks chart, establishing AFI as more than underground punk credentialed. The album eventually moved over 1.26 million copies and earned Platinum certification.
Decemberunderground (2006) marked their artistic peak commercially, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 with Miss Murder topping the Modern Rock Tracks chart. The record's success proved their fanbase had deepened considerably from the Sing the Sorrow era. Over the following years, Crash Love (2009) and Burials (2013) maintained solid chart positions, while their 2017 self-titled The Blood Album (their tenth studio effort) placed at number five, confirming their staying power across multiple decades.
