About Aerosmith
The band formed in Boston in 1970 around Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer, and Brad Whitford. Their early run from 1973 to 1979 produced the catalog that matters most to collectors: debut Aerosmith, Get Your Wings, Toys in the Attic, Rocks, Draw the Line, and Night in the Ruts. Those records established the template for arena hard rock, with charting singles like Sweet Emotion, Dream On, and Walk This Way. By 1979 the band had fractured under internal conflict and substance abuse, with Perry departing that year and Whitford in 1981. The 1982 album Rock in a Hard Place failed to maintain momentum, marking a commercial low point.
Perry and Whitford returned in 1984, and the band rebuilt with Done with Mirrors followed by the Run-D.M.C. collaboration on Walk This Way in 1986. That remake proved a cultural turning point, launching them into the MTV era and the multi-platinum success of Permanent Vacation, Pump, Get a Grip, and Nine Lives. These later albums produced the biggest singles of their career: Dude (Looks Like a Lady), Angel, Janie's Got a Gun, Cryin', and Crazy. Aerosmith holds the record for most total certifications by an American band, with 25 gold, 18 platinum, and 12 multi-platinum albums. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and Tyler and Perry received Songwriters Hall of Fame honors in 2013.
The band retired from touring in 2024 after Tyler's vocal injury ended their farewell tour.
