Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi White arrived when hip-hop production was locked into James Brown breaks and P-Funk basslines. Instead of following that path, they dug into jazz records, pulling bebop and hard bop samples alongside live instrumentation including double bassist Ron Carter. The Low End Theory in 1991 proved the concept worked commercially and artistically, helping establish alternative hip-hop as a genuine movement rather than a novelty. That album's success forced producers like Dr. Dre to reassess their own approach, with Dre explicitly citing The Low End Theory as inspiration for The Chronic. Pete Rock watched Q-Tip crate-digging and felt the competitive pressure to dig deeper himself.
The group's reach extended beyond production technique. Q-Tip's philosophical observations paired with Phife Dawg's conversational, everyman delivery gave the group lyrical depth that appealed across demographics. People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm opened doors for Scarface and signaled to Pharrell Williams that rap could be art rather than just entertainment. By the mid-1990s, their influence had spawned what critic Kierna Mayo called neo-everything: D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Maxwell, and Lauryn Hill all followed paths the group had cleared.
After breaking up in 1998, the group reunited for touring in 2006 and returned to the studio in 2016 with We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service, though Phife Dawg's death during that session meant Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi White completed the album as a farewell.
